In a world where we are trying immensely hard to be horribly productive at all times, sleep deprivation is no news! But it obviously has its own consequences ranging from weight gain to some serious chronic diseases (even a stroke!). Thus, what we don’t understand is that what we are losing sleep over can actually be done more productively if we really get adequate rest and a good night’s sleep. Thus, let’s list down how important sleep can be for us:-

1. Sleep helps in balancing our hormones that regulate satiety that we derive from food. Thus, if we do not sleep well our tendency to eat more increases and consequentially so does our weight. Once the hormone-level is altered, we tend to eat more than we should because once sleep deprived, we eat not to derive nutrition from the food, but to satisfy our need to feel more energetic.

2. For teenagers and young-adults, who are pressured too much to be good at their academics and generate winning careers, growth hormones are actually secreted during a good night’s sleep. Therefore, it is absolutely pertinent for them to be able to sleep for at least eight to ten hours every night.

3. Sleep helps in restoring our brain cells. It helps in regulating our body’s fluid movements as well. Lack of sleep can manifest many chronic diseases, including inflicting someone with a type 2 diabetes. Sleep deprivation leads to weaken our immune system, i.e., our body becomes weak in fighting various diseases. Proper sleep also tends to help in strengthening our hearts, which is why a lack of good sleep tends to increase your risk of getting a heart disease or even a stroke. When it comes to improving your health, you can even start practicing my very simple 15-minute process of "Dynamic Yoga"  which can be practiced anywhere easily.

4. Inadequate sleep leads you to many behavioral issues as well. People who are not able to generally sleep well at night tend to be more receptive towards getting an attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). ADHD is a neurodevelopment disorder which is characterized by the inability to pay attention, excessive (hyper) activity and the inability to control your behavior especially the kind which seems quite unsuitable for your age.

5. Insufficient sleep can also inflict a lack of concentration and productivity. Whenever you are unable to derive a good night’s sleep, the next day will make you constantly feel drowsy or sleepy, which in turn will distract you from the work at hand. Thus, you will not be able to get your work done effectively or efficiently.

6. Sleep increases your energy levels and your ability to put in bigger and better physical efforts at your gym, or Yoga center or in any other physical activity you choose to do – especially at cardiovascular exercises because it helps in regulating and maintaining your cardiovascular health. Sleep increases your ability to be able to put in a more accurate effort.

7. A good sleep also helps you in improving your memory. Sleep enables memory consolidation, i.e., it helps to bring together all the information that you’ve been storing or gathering the previous day. This means that this stored information can subsequently be used as knowledge when required. Thus sleep shall help you remember. Along with the same, sleep helps in increasing your creativity and enhancing it by gifting you with more rest.

8. Sleep affects the quality of life. Too little sleep is associated with a shorter life-span. If you sleep longer, and more importantly, if you sleep better you shall live better- because that way you are combating the feelings of stress, anxiety and depression.

9. Of course, you all must have guessed that a good night’s sleep leads to lowering our stress levels. Stress leads to a straining blood-pressure as well and hence needs to be taken very very seriously. Lower stress means a more controlled blood-pressure and reduced cholesterol. Additionally, stress in itself can lead to many other behavioural challenges.

10. Sleep increases our emotional well-being by helping us stay away from depression. Lack of sleep leads to mood-swings and contributes highly in increasing our anxiety-levels. This, later on, increases our level of depression thus making us feel as if our life’s a burden.
